Abstract
A retrospective drug use evaluation (DUE) of intravenous metronidazole was conducted for hospitalized adult patients. Criteria for DUE on metronidazole modified from those suggested by Am. J. Hosp. Pharm. The charts of 73 patients were reviewed from July 1. 1995 to July 31. 1995 in Seoul National University Hospital. The results were analyzed in two groups, department of Internal Medicine and Surgery. The justification of use was 54.8% in Medicine and 76.2% in Surgery. Several criteria including body temperature monitering, WBC monitoring, CBC, LFT before initial dose were well documented. Criteria for duration of therapy were well documented. Metronidazole was injected not to exceed for 4 weeks every cases. In outcome analysis, blood culture after discontinuing drug was rarely documented, with accepted level of 48.4% in Medicine and 35.7% in Surgery. It was considered that communication to medical staffs about these findings is important factor to induce the optimal usage of metronidazole.
